Not our fault: council

IT was no surprise party but it certainly ended in an unpleasant surprise.

John and Vi Travers were entertaining more than 30 guests at their Donlan Road home on December 16 last year when raw effluent started gushing from their downstairs toilet "like a geyser".

It flooded the Travers' kitchen and sunroom, putting an early end to their Christmas celebrations shortly after 8pm.

The cause of the problem - a root blockage - was identified soon afterwards.

But while the blockage was easily removed, the impact of the December 16 incident on the Travers' day-to-day lives continues.

The Travers were forced into alternate accommodation for almost three months, only returning to their Mollymook home the Saturday before last.

They are still waiting for a new kitchen and while they have a stove for cooking they have no sink for washing dishes.

Automobile Assocation lowers homeowners' insurance rates

California State Automobile Association will reduce its homeowners' insurance rates by an average of 10.6 percent starting Aug. 1, marking the motor club's first overall home insurance rate decrease in more than 20 years.

California insurance regulators approved the rate decrease Friday.

About 500,000 California policyholders -- most of them are in Northern California -- will save an average of $100 per home policy, AAA spokeswoman Jenny Mack said.

The insurer is lowering homeowners' rates because its loss experience has changed and it needs to have competitive rates, she said.

Ashland woman comes home to inferno

A fire of undetermined origin damaged an Ashland home Monday morning despite the efforts of a resident to battle the smoky blaze with a garden hose, Ashland Fire and Rescue officials said.

Melissa Tiszko returned to her rented home in the 700 block of Walnut Street at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, and, from outside could hear a smoke alarm. When she opened the front door, she found heavy, black smoke filling the house, Ashland Fire Division Chief Margueritte Hickman said.

She grabbed a garden hose to try to put out the fire, but the heat and smoke prevented her from reaching it, so she quickly ducked back outside to call 9-1-1.

Ashland Fire and Rescue sent two engine crews, and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 sent one, said Ashland Fire Capt. Walt Anders. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke rolling from the front door and windows of the two-story home.
